OLD STYLE

AN ADVENTURE CALLED BRAGUESA GUITAR Several years of studying and playing this instrument led me to the inevitability of making all the work I carried out about the Braguesa Guitar public. I learned the techniques, developed them, chose the oldest method of tuning and the one which I consider to better customize this instrument. I tried to avoid the comfort and narrowness of the traditional framework, but instead and above all, to create my own repertoire for an instrument which is an integral part of our cultural heritage. Showcasing the various facets of the instrument, was one of the main purposes of this work. The tuning Moda Velha (Old Style) is a tribute to the common guitar players, simple and anonymous people who filled every corner of Portugal with the music coming out of their intensely strummed guitars. Moda Velha (Old Style) represents the strong desire of not letting the ancestral sounds of the Portuguese collective memory get lost in the mists of time. Because I believe that a nation may exist without a flag, an anthem, leaders and even without a territory. But it cannot subsist without a popular culture. It is the one that binds the peoples and their indelible essence. CG

WHY “OLD STYLE”?

“Old Style” is the popular term used to classify the tuning considered to be the oldest in this instrument (A3-F#3- B3-G2- D2). It has the particularityof having the sharpest string group in the 3 rd order (in the middle of the 5 orders of double strings). This allows a very unique and shiny sound, as well as some interesting harmonic possibilities, even though of difficult execution. It is with this tuning that the braguesa guitars in this record are played.
